Vitamin C, with flavonoids

Considering the chemical and mental environmental stress human body is exposed to, as well as the quality of our food, it is undisputable that we need extra vitamin C (ascorbic acid) intake in order to preserve our health.

Namely, it is the substance on which the stability of bones and connective tissues depends, moreover, the integrity of immune system, the synthesis of important hormones and partly the detoxifying function of the liver as well, and it is the substance which supplies the most part (almost the 80%) of the body with anti free radical protection of the “watery systems”.

Its complete deficiency in the skin, periosteum, joints and inner organs results in bleedings, hematuria, painful ossification insufficiency, myasthenia, as well as increased infection proneness which may lead to death. Relative deficiency does not show a rosy picture as well.

Relatively insufficient intake has two main consequences.

  • One of them is cancerous cell degeneration accompanying free radical mechanism, which is most likely to happen due to the radical reactions within the body, which depends on the environmental stress. In lack of adequate amounts of vitamin C, free radical chain reactions, proceeding through “watery” systems (intercellular mass, cell plasma) transfer to the hereditary materials (genes, DNA proteins), and by reducing them into radical state triggers cell mutation leading to cancer.
  •  The other are nervous, immune and circulatory system diseases developing as the consequence of reduced stress tolerance, having epidemic proportions due to today’s stressful way of life. It is the hormone cortisol produced by adrenal glands which is mainly responsible for the stress tolerance of the body. However its synthesis requires vitamin C.

Due to inadequate vitamin C intake the available quantity is used up by the priority regulation of the body for the processes considered “more important”, therefore cortisol would not be produced in adequate amounts. As a result adaptation to circumstances (cold, warmth, starvation, injury, flight, fight, etc.) would not take place, body exhaust and breaks down soon. The above mentioned conditions and consequences, as scientifically proved, cannot be exclusively traced back to the deficiency of vitamin C in itself, but the deficiency or complete lack of substances which are meant to cooperate with it.

The most important, food originated subsidiary materials of vitamin C, are bioflavonoids (flavon glycosides). The most characteristic fact of the cooperation is that – being both of them antioxidants – they can protect each other from oxidation which would result in losing the efficiency.

Besides flavonoids have other physiological effects as well, which have been found out by Albert Szent-Györgyi, prominent Hungarian biochemist, while studying vitamin C discovered by himself. He observed that pathogenic permeability of the capillaries can not be stopped only by supplementing ascorbic acid. For this other substances, certain flavon glycosides are needed; in 1936 he isolated one of them and called it permeability regulating vitamin (vitamin P). In case experimental animals were given a diet causing P avitaminosis, their skin cracked at the slightest sucking and started to bleed, independent of their vitamin C-status. It has been also stated that vitamin Ps affects beneficially the calcium levels in the blood, increase blood coagulation, and reduce cell permeability. Their blood vessel wall activity affecting capillaries blocks the outflow of inflammatory serum and protein into the tissues, alleviating the acuteness of inflammatory and allergic processes. In elderly age chronic venous disorder and resulting leg ulcer is very frequent. In such a case due to hypertension affecting veins that have lost their flexibility serous liquid flows into tissues, oxygen supply of the tissues worsens, and products of cell metabolism accumulate in them. On the ankles edemas appear in form of painless swelling. Protein flowing into the tissues causes irritation, inflammation and eczema-like skin symptoms, which may lead to ulcer development.

This pathography has been examined in many studies; the effect of flavonoids has been studied on 481 patients. After 28 day of treatment every studied parameter improved significantly, therefore experts consider these molecules effective supplements in this disease. Since then many other flavonoids of similar effects have been found in plants, which have been also proved to have greater antioxidant capacities, consequently are more effective in preventing cancer than expected. Having examined people at increased risk of cancer development (smokers, alcoholics, persons working with chemicals, etc.) it has been found that tumors appeared in lesser amounts in those who consumed flavonoids, or vitamin C formulas supplemented with them.

In summary, vitamin C formulas containing bioflavonoids as well have effective cancer preventing and anti-stress effects, moreover they significantly reduce the acuteness of different inflammatory and allergic processes, stop diverse skin bleeding of capillary origin, as well as kidney bleedings, reduce excessive protein permeability of capillaries and cell membrane, and given as a supplement they significantly relieve the symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency, infections, as well as in kidney and liver diseases.
